Sustainability is slammin’

At Snarky Hippie, we are committed to packaging our products in a way that is environmentally responsible, less wasteful, and intentional.  When deciding how to package our products, we were mindful about the current state of pollution, waste, and environmental destruction that our planet is facing.  As a result, we’re currently not using any plastics, even though it would have been a less costly and more convenient option.  We couldn’t reconcile contributing to that sort of negative impact on our climate, oceans, and natural habitats.  Plus, we like to be able to sleep well at night and nightmares of dolphins chasing us with sharp plastic shanks weren’t something we wanted to manifest.  We also make every effort to avoid excessive product or shipping packaging. We support companies that offer alternatives to bubble wrap, traditional padded envelopes, and packing peanuts.  We truly believe that you get what you give and we’re not looking to suffocate our petunias with Styrofoam cups.

We’ve chosen to operate in a way that we feel is more responsible.  Bearing in mind the environmental impact of pollution and waste, we considered these factors:

*Reduced waste prevents destruction of our natural finite resources

*Conversation of energy.  Recycled products require less energy to produce than creating products from natural resources.  Less energy consumption also means fewer greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

*Reduced waste contributes to using our raw materials more efficiently to sustain future generations and species.

*Degrading plastic pollution releases toxic chemicals into the environment and contaminates our soil and air for 500-1000 years.

This is just a small list of the impact that waste and pollution have in our everyday lives.  There are so many more detrimental results.  We’re just not cool with that.

Our packaging is designed to be either biodegradable or reusable.  Not sure what to do?  Here are some fun ways to repurpose our packaging:

Make your own candles: Store bought scented candles often contain ingredients that release harmful toxins and carcinogens.  Make your own and breathe easy!

Create terrariums: Build your own little ecosystem and watch it thrive.

Build first aid kits and distribute them to those in need: Include bandages, topical antibiotic, pain relievers, sterile gauze, etc.

Put together “treat” kits for friends, family, and coworkers:  Make someone’s day with their favorite candies, savory snacks, or positive affirmations.

Grow your own fresh herbs for a windowsill garden: Basil, parsley, and mint are good options.

Store herbs and spices and build an under-shelf spice rack: This is great for buying spices in bulk or creating better organization in your kitchen.  You can even apply magnets to store on the fridge or under cabinets.

Make a memory jar: Fill it with ticket stubs from your favorite events, plane tickets from your best vacations, good luck trinkets, sea shells from beaches you’ve visited, and so on.

And our personal favorite… Infuse spirits with fresh fruit or spices: How about strawberry vanilla vodka, jalapeño infused tequila, or cinnamon whiskey?  Yes, please!

Ultimately, we strive to do our part in supporting a responsible business model while still providing a quality product that we can be proud of.  We are so happy to share our vision with you and are certain that together we can impact change.  Together we can also create tasty infused cocktails.  In moderation, of course.

Have a peaceful and sustainable day!
